Are you experiencing any of these symptoms, and does your blood work still come back normal?
Weight gain that doesn’t respond to diet or exercise
Sleep trouble or fatigue
Hot flashes
Cold hands and feet, or just feeling cold in general
Depression
Brain fog
Thinning of the hair or losing hair in the outer third of your eyebrows
Dry skin
Infertility
Constipation
It may be your thyroid…..
The majority of these symptoms start long before a blood test would come back positive for any thyroid condition. By the time your blood work shows a positive test, you have most likely been having your symptoms for 10-20 years.
Let me share some statistics with you.
- An estimated 27 million people in the US alone have a thyroid condition, the majority are women.
- Of those 27 million, 50% have been diagnosed. That means the other half are dealing with symptoms and have no idea what is wrong with them. This makes thyroid disease the most under diagnosed condition in this country.
- Thyroid conditions are the #1 endocrine disorder in the U.S.
- Dr. Broda Barnes, a leading thyroid doctor, states that 90% of men and women over the age of 40 have sub-optimal thyroid function.
This makes thyroid disease a massive pandemic!
You may have already visited your doctor regarding your symptoms and he or she may have told you that everything is normal. But you know, deep down inside, that something just isn’t right. In assessing thyroid illness, the “goal standard” doctors use is TSH. There is no study that supports that you have a healthy thyroid if your TSH is normal. So you can’t base the health of your thyroid on TSH alone, there are other factors involved.
- Most doctors use non-optimal ranges. Lab normal typically ranges from 0.45 to 4.5 uIU/mL. Studies have indicated that TSH over 2 uIU/mL can indicate health problems.
- T4 may not be converting to active T3. T4 is the storage form of thyroid hormone, and T3 is the active form. T3 is what gets into the cell. It’s what helps us feel good, gives us energy, and helps us lose weight. You need to know if your body is converting T4 to T3.
- Active T3 is not getting into the cell. You may be producing T3, but it is not getting into the cell due to cellular inflammation and blunted cell receptors (hormone resistance).
- You may be reverse T3 dominant. You may be dealing with reverse T3 (RT3) dominance. During times of chemical, physical, or emotional stress, RT3 blocks active T3.
- The thyroid is the only problem. The thyroid works in synergy with the adrenals, pancreas, pituitary, and the liver. Conversion of T4 to active T3 occurs in the liver. Poor liver function may be an indicator of why you may not be feeling well.
The above mentioned factors should help you understand why you may not be feeling well despite what your lab work says.
In summary, thyroid disease is one of the most underdiagnosed conditions in this country. I want to encourage you to start looking deeper into your health and not just basing it on your symptoms or isolated blood tests. Achieving good health is based on taking a holistic approach, lifestyle habits, emotional health, and reducing toxic exposure in your food and environment. It’s also important that you don’t try to figure this out on your own and work with a cellular healing and detox specialist who understands the physiology of the body and gets to the underlying cause of your health problem, not just suppressing the symptoms.
